For #BlackHistoryMonth, we spent time asking members of the Rutgers community how they plan to make history. Meet Marc Younker, President of Rutgers Black Law Students Association Pre-Law Division.

"Since I was a child, my family taught me that with discipline and faith, I am capable of achieving anything. As a young Black man, student activist, and future attorney, I’ve come to believe that discipline and faith are not just values that are key to achieving my goals; they are key to changing the world.

Audre Lorde once said, “Each of us must find our work and do it. Militancy no longer means guns at high noon if it ever did. It means actively working for change, sometimes in the absence of any surety that change is coming.” Lorde’s words remind me of Black leaders, like Ella Baker, Dr. King, Dr. Angela Davis and Bayard Rustin. Without any certainty that their efforts would be fruitful, our Black elders mobilized our communities with discipline because they had faith that changing America for the better was possible. In our nation today, it seems just as difficult to ignite meaningful change through politics and the law.

Despite difficulty, I aspire to walk in the footsteps of the legends that came before me as a movement lawyer. For me, walking in their footsteps looks like continuing their work to disrupt cycles of poverty, expanding access to opportunity and contributing to a movement that will provide hope for a future we can all live in. While America is far from a perfect union, I am confident that my work will build pressure in the streets, in the courtroom and in the halls of government for change that will allow America to be a country that is more just, more equal, more caring, and more prosperous.

I have found my work and I have the faith and discipline
to do it. I am ready to make history."

Check back each week as we feature members of the Rutgers community throughout #BlackHistoryMonth. ⁣
