For #BlackHistoryMonth, we spent time asking members of the Rutgers community how they plan to make history. Meet Tiara Nicholson, President of F.A.C.E Modeling Team, Inc (@rumodelingteam).

"As a creative in the fashion industry, I stand for and model confidence and unlimited opportunity. That is how I run the organization F.A.C.E. Modeling Team. You can tell a lot about a person by their presence and how they carry themselves. It is my goal to build and develop the skills to maintain the confidence in all those who look to me as a mentor and leader. Similarly, there is an extraordinary amount of opportunity for Black and brown people in the entertainment and fashion industry.

Now, more than ever, our hair, skin, vernacular, and mannerisms are celebrated in public spaces. However, we are accustomed to seeing the same faces that represent a small portion of what Black is. There is still a film barrier keeping hundreds and thousands of black faces from making a name for themselves and being recognized for the astonishing artistry they create. Often, this barrier is built by our own people who, instead of lending a helping hand, choose to withhold information and opportunities for personal gain. A helping hand can go a long way for an early creative just trying to navigate the industry, therefore, any opportunity that presents itself to me, I share with my mentees. Their success is my success and is an indication that my leadership made an impact on someone's life.

I will make history by removing the barrier from doors that were only opened for us to be witnesses to the success of others. While Blackness is celebrated more, there is still an underrepresented portion of Black people who deserve the opportunity to grow and prosper. I have been blessed with the opportunities I have received by the grace of God and with that knowledge, I will be a blessing to others."

Check back each week as we feature members of the Rutgers community throughout #BlackHistoryMonth. ⁣
