For #BlackHistoryMonth, we spent time asking members of the Rutgers community how they plan to make history. Meet Ajibola Oyeniran, President of the Black Men's Collective (@bmcrutgers).

"I have been struggling with finding my “why” or my purpose in life for a while. It was not until recently that I discovered it. My purpose in life is to build a better world for all of Black America and unite the African diaspora. I know that I can accomplish this by pursuing a career in medicine to help the underserved and pursuing a career in the political or governmental field, where I can be a leader, advocate, and friend for my brothers and sisters. It is no secret that Black people are at higher risk of diseases, Black women are more likely to experience maternal mortality, and Black people in the LGBTQ community experience discrimination in healthcare. Most importantly, people of color are more likely to be uninsured versus any other counterpart. It is with my confidence that I can help fix these disparities.

I have always been told to dream big and that if I put my mind to something, I can get it done through hard work. That is why my goal is to build hospitals and clinics in every state and in the country of Africa that caters to us minorities that guarantee them affordable healthcare. In addition, I have seen people like LeBron James and Jalen Rose build schools. This is another goal of mine, where I can build schools where minorities can have a safe space to learn academia and trades. These goals are very high, but this is what wakes me up in the morning and motivates me to excel in anything I put my mind to. Every day, I think of my greatest inspirations: the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey Sr., Martin Luther King Jr., Barack Obama, Frederick Douglass, and Shirley Chisholm.

I know that I can make just as significant an impact in this world as them."
