## Caption

🇺🇸 Penn State salutes all those members of the US Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. One of our campus landmarks, Veterans Plaza, is located near the northeast corner of Old Main.

The Greek lettering reads, “with it [your shield ] or on it.” The phase was believed to be said to soldiers as they would return either victorious or carried home on their shields.

The senior class gift from 2011, the Veterans Plaza honors all Penn State students, living and deceased, who have served in the United States Military. The plaza’s curved wall is named to honor Lt. Michael P. Murphy, a member of the class of 1998 and the first University alumnus to be awarded the Medal of Honor. A Navy Seal, Lt. Murphy received this singular distinction posthumously for his courageous actions in 2005 during the war in Afghanistan.
