Great Drives - No. 16 at The Ranch GC

"GREAT DRIVE." It's a phrase every golfer hopes to hear, and it's one that holds many different meanings.

When it comes to The Ranch in Southwick, it's impossible to look past the great drive that leads you there. For those flocking from the east or way out west, the peaceful trek along the Mass Pike can put you in a state of Zen before arriving at one of the state's top-ranked public golf courses.

Depending on the direction from which you arrive, the 16th hole, cleverly named Ski Hill, is the first look one gets of The Ranch. Not only is it situated in the front corner of the property, but it also raises up to the clouds, with the teeing area towering well over 100 feet above the green. While making your way around The Ranch's stunning layout, the anticipation of this hole is impossible to escape.

Great drive also holds true in the sense that this 16th hole is a memorable driving hole. A well-struck tee shot will ride the slope, through the moguls, and into the go-zone on this risk-reward par-5. Be sure to measure the length of your drive too, as it will likely be your longest of the day...possibly the year.

The best holes in golf often force players to strategize their way to par or better, and this hole does just that. With a fairway that snakes between two ponds short of the green, golfers are forced to decide if they have enough pop to get home in two, or if a layup short of the ponds is the best way forward. No matter how you approach it, the 16th is a hole you won't soon forget.

Like the piece de resistance in an art gallery, as you move on to the next, your eyes can't help but to wander back. It makes you feel bad for the 17th, which if situated elsewhere, wouldn't be overshadowed by the 16th - both figuratively and literally.

This year it's on you to hit the Ski Hill in Southwick.
