After Leverkusen’s DFB Pokal win yesterday, Heidenheim and Lennard Maloney have qualified for the Europa Conference League playoffs.

They finished 8th in their first ever Bundesliga season. 👏🏾

Maloney has been a key player for them. It’s a shame he’s not in the latest USMNT squad.

He is a 6’2 no-nonsense tough tackler, who is versatile enough to play both as a defensive midfielder and a center-back.

Maloney played 29 league games for Heidenheim this season, including in the win over Bayern Munich and the two draws against Borussia Dortmund. 

These are excellent results especially considering Heidenheim just got promoted last year, for the first time ever in their history.

Who would’ve thought they would end up getting a European spot?

The 24-year-old Maloney was also key in helping them get promoted.

He got his first call-up to the USMNT in October. He was extremely excited and couldn’t stop smiling after making his debut.

Maloney got called up again in November and in January, he talked to German magazine Kicker about how happy he was to get the chance and how he proudly shows the photos to his American dad.

He also said he is trying his best to impress Gregg Berhalter and he has the mentality and work rate to stand out from others.

Unfortunately, Maloney wasn’t called up in March and he’s not the part of the latest USMNT squad.

It’s surprising considering how good he’s been in the Bundesliga.

With Tyler Adams struggling with injuries throughout the season and with the squads for Copa América expanded to 26 players, it’s a bit of a shame there’s no spot for Maloney.

Still only 24 though, let’s hope he can get back to Berhalter’s plans soon.

For now, he deserves a nice summer after an excellent season in one of the best leagues in the world.
