To the girl that found a love for sports because it was the one place she could train and push her body, mind, and emotions: never forget that sports is always about the journey and not the end result. Progression is never linear, and you will learn a lot about yourself - and those that you surround yourself with - when you face starts and stops in your training. Don’t lose faith that focusing on making gradual improvements and nourishing all parts of your life will pay off and keep the joy in the journey.

To the girl that cherished every moment of training and competition: know that the best part of sports is sharing the adventure with family and friends. Always cherish the support and friendships you make along the way. But also know that those that love you are there for you in the tough time, as well as the fun times. The bravest thing you can do is ask for help and if those you trust don’t respond with love and faith — find someone else to help. Always remember to fight for yourself. You’re worth it.

To the girl that looked forward to her post-race ritual of getting milkshakes with her family: keep loving life! Know that there is no such thing as “good food” or “bad food”. Don’t let anyone tell you that you aren’t good enough because of how you look. Don’t let them shake your confidence in yourself.
•••
I sometimes look back on my younger self and wish I could give her a hug. I wish I could tell her that she shouldn’t listen to the negative people around her. I wish I could have protected her. But I also feel so proud of her for fighting for herself. It may have taken time, but she did her best. I may still have bad days, but I have learned to treat myself with more compassion on those bad days.

Today is the penultimate day of National Eating Disorders Awareness week. This week marks a beginning, not an end. Whether you are starting your healing journey or years deep into recovery, you always deserve to fight for yourself.
