Throughout June, Brood XIX and XIII cicadas are emerging throughout the South and Midwest. These special insects, known for their unique 17-year life cycle, will be popping up all around us. It’s a perfect time to learn about nature together! 

Here are some fun cicada facts to share with your kids:
🌳 Cicadas spend most of their lives underground, only emerging to sing, mate, and lay eggs.
🎶 Male cicadas sing loud songs to attract females. Some can be as loud as a lawnmower!
🌿 After they emerge, cicadas shed their exoskeletons, leaving behind a “shell” that kids love to find.
🦖 Cicadas have been around for millions of years. Fossils show that they existed during the time of the dinosaurs!
🌞 Cicadas are harmless to humans and pets, making them a perfect subject for curious little scientists.
