## Caption

This is Mike. He’s not a soccer player, but his buddies call him “Foot.” After unsuccessful searches of things to do, I decided to go for a walk and see where I ended up. I turned down Auburn Ave. Auburn Ave is a historic African-American neighborhood, nicknamed “Sweet Auburn.” I started walking, took some photos, read the historical signs, and soon ran into Mike. A cab driver had asked where I was going thinking I needed a ride, but I said just going for a walk. Mike saw my camera and pointed “Read that.” “The Oldest Black Shop In Atlanta.” Mike asked “You ever seen King’s house?” I said no. “I’m gonna give you a history walk.” Mike walked up all of “The A” with me. Pointing to all the places he had seen Martin Luther King Jr. daily. Sharing what abandoned buildings used to be, introducing me to his friends, and showing me his old favorite spot for ribs (“ooooh man, they fell right off the bone”). He kept saying things like “You don’t realize where you’re walking just yet. It’ll hit you soon.” My man Mike was a walking history book. He said to me, “White people come here, even black people do and they don’t walk this walk. You’re 23 and you came down here and walked the walk.” He’d pose for me and say “4 fingers, no thumb!” One of the last things he said was, “I could die tomorrow and still have sweet dreams. Man, I lived a great life. I loved this street.” Before I left, I gave Mike some money and told him to get himself some ribs. Mike showed me a side of Atlanta most people turn around at and I’ll be grateful for it for a long time. #SweetAuburn
