“Emily here from nurturebynaps! These are my top 3 tips for parents who are gearing up to potty train and that I wish I leaned into more during potty training with my first 2 girls.
 
1) Take the pressure off. It can feel like there is a lot of pressure around potty training, especially if you think you need to have it done in a certain window of time. Pressure on the parents to make it happen and pressure on the child to get it right. It might go great the first time around and it might happen quickly for your child, but there are many times where kids start potty training and it just doesn’t seem to be working (even when they were showing signs of being interested!) That doesn’t mean you didn’t do a good job, or they aren’t ever going to get it. Know that it’s OK to table it and revisit it at a later date and time. On average, girls potty train between ages 2-3.5 years of age and boys between ages 3-4.5 years of age.
 
2) Engage your kiddo and make it fun. From letting them pick out new big kid underwear at the store, to having potty’s that make a flushing sound or have their favorite characters on them - there are so many little ways that you can excite your child in a big way! Get them a stool to get on and off the potty on their own and for washing their hands after. When my kids successfully go potty and flush, we always break into a little song and dance to celebrate and they absolutely love this positive reaction.
 
3) Be ready for on the go. Parents definitely fear the on-the-go piece of potty training. What if we are on a long car ride or at the park? Having a little potty that you can throw in the bottom of your stroller or the backseat of your car with a pack of baby wipes is going to take that stress off you. I usually get small trash can liners to line the potty so that they can pee, we wipe, bag it up and go back to whatever fun we were having.”
