We continue our #ThankABoardMember series, and asked the following questions to Benjamin Perry, Member of the Board of Trustees:

1. Tell us about yourself. (Where are you from, what kind of work you have done, etc.).

Before joining the St. Augustine Lighthouse Board of Trustees, I was a 30-year career educator at a public school in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I have worked in many entities of education, from a secondary licensed teacher, school counselor, assistant principal, principal, associate superintendent, and superintendent of the school. I have also had the pleasure of working as a principal at Edward White High School with Duval County Public Schools in Jacksonville, Florida. I have also volunteered on local boards in St. Augustine, Florida.

2. Why did you become involved with the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, and how long have you been affiliated with the organization? 

I have been involved with the Museum for about five years. I was recruited by the late Peter Spiller, once Chairperson of the Board. I was in U.S. Coast Guard, and since the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime  Museum was a boating operation, I was intrigued by its mission and vision of helping the community understand, learn, and value its culture.
 
3. What are your hobbies and interests? 

I really enjoy traveling and discovering the world around us. I walk and bike often and fish on days I want to relax. I enjoy playing tennis, visiting the beach, and reading.

4. What’s your favorite part about the Museum? 

I think my favorite part of the Museum is the lighthouse and working with an incredibly gifted Board of Directors who continues to focus on improving the overall experience of its visitors.
