We continue our #ThankABoardMember series, and asked the following questions to Margaret Van Ormer, Trustee At Large for the Board of Trustees:

1. Tell us about yourself. (Where are you from, what kind of work you have done, etc.).

I was born in Ohio and raised in Pennsylvania and Maryland. My undergraduate degree is from West Virginia University, and both graduate degrees are from the University of Florida. I began my career as a teacher of deaf children at The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. I eventually became the Administrator of Academics and supervised the academic area school-wide. I supervised interns at Flagler College and oversaw multiple grants with Duval County Public Schools. I served on the Board of The Florida School for the Deaf and Blind Foundation.

2. Why did you become involved with the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, and how long have you been affiliated with the organization?

I became involved with the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum through the Junior Service League of St. Augustine. I was one of the original JSL members involved in restoring the Keeper’s House and served as co-chair of that project. I continue to be very interested in the ongoing restoration of the Keeper’s House and Tower. I have been a Board of Trustees member for six years, currently serve as the Development Committee Chair, and am the Trustee At Large.

3. What are your hobbies and interests?

I enjoy hiking, exercising, traveling, and spending time with family, particularly our grandchildren. I grew up traveling with my family to National Parks and going to museums. The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum is a natural fit for me. It is a local treasure!

4. What’s your favorite part about the Museum?

The history shared with families, the beautiful view from the tower, and the expertise of the Museum staff. There is always something new happening, which is very exciting.
