We continue our #ThankABoardMember series, and asked the following questions to Doris Wiles, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees:

1. Tell us about yourself. (Where are you from, what kind of work you have done, etc.).

I am the child of German immigrants, born in Chicago and raised on the East Coast. I graduated from the University of Florida, studying English and German. My husband, Doug, and I spent our first three years of marriage in Germany, where he served in the Army. Although I have been a Life and Health Insurance Agent, I have mostly volunteered in our community. I served as a member of the Junior Women’s Club, on the St. Augustine Humane Society board for over 20 years, and as a member and past president of the Woman’s Exchange of St. Augustine.

2. Why did you become involved with the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, and how long have you been affiliated with the organization? 

As a new member of the Junior Service League in 1982, I joined the effort to restore our Keeper’s House, and in the 1990s I served on the committee that created the Museum as an entity independent from the JSL. I was elected in 2019 to serve as a Museum trustee, and in June I became Chairperson. That’s a 40-year relationship!
 
3. What are your hobbies and interests? 

As a grandmother of six, I spend a lot of time enjoying my grandchildren’s adventures. Doug and I enjoy traveling, exploring new places, and revisiting old favorites. We look forward to returning to Gainesville this year for the University of Florida Gator football games.

4. What’s your favorite part about the Museum? 

How can I not say the tower, with its ever-changing vistas and our visitors’ joy as they see the view for the first time? Watching our LAMP team in the archaeology building is always exciting. But my favorite part is seeing the Keeper’s House, still standing as a testament to the vision of a few strong women over forty years ago.
