The Museum has started a #ThankABoardMember series, where we highlight current Board of Trustee members. We asked the following questions to Kathy Shetler, immediate Past Chairperson of the Board of Trustees:

1. Tell us about yourself. (Where are you from, what kind of work you have done, etc.).

I was born in Wyoming but raised in Montana and Colorado. Most of my undergraduate and graduate schooling occurred in Colorado and Rhode Island. Working in the academic arena, I began my career as a teacher and then moved into management. At the educational institution where I worked, I set up its first Advancement Office that specialized in grant writing, public relations, and private fundraising. 

2. Why did you become involved with the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, and how long have you been affiliated with the organization? 

I served as the first Chairperson of the restoration of the Keepers’ House in the early 1980s as a member of the Junior Service League of St. Augustine. I continued to support the restoration of the Keepers’ House and the tower. I was honored to be asked to serve as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Museum and, more recently, to serve as its Chair.
 
3. What are your hobbies and interests? 

I love all forms of exercise, including skiing, hiking, walking, and working out at the gym. Thanks to my maternal grandmother, I have a passion for genealogy and history, particularly Native American history. I’m a strong advocate for Native American rights, National parks and Monuments, and our hiking trail networks, specifically the Colorado, Pacific Coast, and Appalachian Trails. 

4. What’s your favorite part about the Museum? 

The ever-expanding growth of the Museum.
