Today we recognize the remarkable achievements of Loretta Perfectus Walsh, a trailblazer, who in March of 1917, was sworn into the United States Navy as a chief petty officer. She was the first woman to officially serve in the U.S. armed forces in a capacity other than a civilian nurse and also the first female chief petty officer.
