St. Augustine's history begins centuries ago with the coronation of Philip II of Spain as king.  He will send Pedro Menendez to Florida to force the French Protestants from Spanish territory and create settlements like San Agustin (later St. Augustine), beginning the Spanish conquest of La Florida.
