Alfie's story ✨

"We got Alfie as a puppy in August 2017. He instantly became my baby and my best friend all rolled into one.

Fast forward to March 31st 2022 Alfie came back from a usual walk, he was a little wobbly on his feet and couldn’t get up the first step of ours stairs. His back was arched but he didn’t cry out in pain. We took him straight to the vet where the assessed him and sent us home with pain relief and suggested keeping an eye on him and bring him back tomorrow.

Within an hour of getting home Alfie couldn’t stand at all. We rushed him back to the vets where they sent us to a specialist. Alfie was assessed again, and diagnosed with stage 5 IVDD, he was only 4 years old. Alfie still had DPS at this point and he would undergo spinal surgery the next morning.

After surgery Alfie had no DPS and a 20% chance of ever walking again, and euthanasia was suggested.

❤️‍🩹 But we weren’t going to give up on him ❤️‍🩹

He stayed at the vets for a week before coming home on no pain killers. He was unable to control his bladder and bowels so we had to express him several times a day for the first couple of weeks, before he regaining control of his bladder. We crate rested him for 8 weeks with only short times in the garden for toilet breaks.

With months of physio, hydrotherapy and love, Alfie began to make some progress. He was able to wee by himself, hold himself up and walk for a few steps independently, all be it wobbly.

Bringing us to 2024, Alfie is living his best life. He’s able to spinal walk much further before getting tired and he has some feeling in his feet. Thanks to Pumpkin and Friends Charity, Alfie was lucky enough to get more of his freedom back with his wheels. He’s now happily running around with his siblings, and enjoying life as he did before his diagnosis. We are so proud of him.

It’s been a long and hard journey to recovery with lots of ups and downs and many tears, but it’s so worth it. It is a constant worry that IVDD will hit again, but if it did I know Alfie will give it his best shot and so will we." 💙
