Rep. Glenda Simmons Jenkins has served on the Gullah/Geechee Nation Assembly of Representatives since 2004, working on behalf of Gullah/Geechee people in her home state of Florida. Across two decades promoting a greater understanding of her culture, its history and heritage, Jenkins has contributed to academic and scholarly research in law and public policy, climate science and social, economic and environmental justice. 

In collaboration with the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN), Northeast Regional office, she launched the Gullah/Geechee Burial Grounds Project recording on the Florida Master Site File a growing list of cemetery sites and other cultural resources in Nassau County. 

Rep. Jenkins is a frequent panelist and presenter on the topics of Gullah/Geechee land retention and cultural sustainability, lending her knowledge and insight as an Amelia Island native to ongoing discourse about cultural resilience and adaptation. 

In 2022 she received the Florida Archaeological Council’s Stewards of Heritage Award and became the founding Executive Director of the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Community Trust Inc., a nonprofit organization focused on creating solutions at the intersection of land and culture. 

An award-winning journalist with a degree in print journalism from the University of Florida, she currently serves on FPAN’s Board of Directors as an at-large lay person board member.
