From 2019-2020, two-thirds of #Philadelphia children were reading below grade level by 4th grade. HUP ICN Clinical Practice Leader Whitney Zachritz, MSN, volunteers as a Reading Captain with Readby4th, an early literacy effort working to ensure all Philadelphia children can read at the appropriate grade level. 

To help encourage early literacy development, Whitney started the Baby First Library Program for ICN families at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). Funded by a Penn Medicine CARES grant, the initiative helps purchase books for every baby delivered at the hospital, connects families to their local Reading Captain, helps them sign up for library cards, and identifies the library nearest to them.
