## Caption

A new generation of cancer-preventing vaccines could stop tumors before they start. 

Robert H. Vonderheide, MD, DPhil, director of the Abramson Cancer Center, and his team, are testing a DNA-based vaccine targeting hTERT, an antigen that marks many tumors in patients in remission from cancers who have inherited mutations in #BRCA1 and #BRCA2 genes. 

The goal? To mobilize T cells to recognize and kill tumor cells, and find a way to judge the effectiveness of these new vaccines, such as through biomarkers that could detect, for instance, a change in blood-borne immune cells. 

“This is formidable,” Dr. Vonderheide says. “But we’re inspired because the impact will be massive.”
