“I hope that we’re setting the tone within Penn Medicine that structural racism needs to be eliminated,” said Kevin B. Mahoney, University of Pennsylvania Health System CEO. 

Last year, Penn Medicine added health equity efforts to the health system’s team goals, including one targeted at reducing maternal morbidity and mortality among Black women, who are three times more likely to die in childbirth than white women in the United States. 

The Penn effort, led by Obstetrics and Gynecology Chair Elizabeth Howell, MD, reduced severe pregnancy-related complications among Black women by 29.4 percent across the health system. It’s a key step to helping parents like Talicia Williams, shown here with her baby girl Zahiri who was born at HUP, get a healthy start together.
