“I think she should be given credit for saving the world,” Penn gene-therapy scientist, Dr. Jean Bennett, says of Dr. Katalin Karikó.

Before she was thrust onto the world stage as one of the scientists behind the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID vaccines, Dr. Karikó spent most of her career working overtime in the lab and defending her visionary ideas. From the time of her childhood – growing up in an adobe house in Hungary with no running water or refrigerator – through her schooling and career, she was hooked on science. Despite many setbacks and overlooked successes, she held on to her idea that messenger RNA (mRNA) could be modified.

It took a chance meeting with immunologist Dr. Drew Weissman and a pandemic to finally catapult her ideas into the center of science and medicine.

washingtonpost tells Dr. Kariko's remarkable story of resilience and steadfast devotion to the scientific process, one that would lead to world-changing discovery.
