After enlisting as a medic in the New Jersey Air National Guard at 19-years-old, Kerwin Barden knew that caring for others would be a lifelong calling. While serving his country, he earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and became a registered nurse, eventually joining the Penn Medicine team at HUP and later cchosp.

24 years after enlisting, Kerwin faced one of the biggest challenges of his career: the COVID-19 pandemic. As captain and chief nurse for the 177th Fighter Wing in Atlantic City, NJ, he was charged with helping run a 250-bed field medical station at the Meadowlands Exposition Center to provide relief for hospitals overrun with severely ill COVID patients.

In addition to caring for patients, Kerwin had the daunting task of developing operation procedures and protocols that would help the facility function efficiently and keep patients and staff safe. He credits the team’s success with their dedication to collaboration. “Time and again, we hit a roadblock. But we always regrouped and found a new route.”
