Lee McClenon, a certified childbirth educator at Pennsylvania Hospital, spearheaded an effort to develop a birthing class geared toward LGBTQ+ families. “Most resources assume two cis, heterosexual parents. We wanted to create a supportive environment where LGBTQ+ families can learn together without having to ‘translate’ things into their own lived experience,” she says.

Although people of all genders, sexual orientations and family dynamics are welcome in this class, it uses stories and images that center queer and trans people, allowing room to discuss relevant topics without worry of standing out.

“This class has all the same evidence-based information that we share in all of our Penn Parenting University Classes, but with some extra ✨sparkle✨. While much of the physiological aspects of birth are the same for anyone, the emotional and relational parts are so important for a new family.
