Our #HealthcareHeroes aren't only made up of nurses and physicians. Penn Medicine's IS team has played a huge role in making sure we've continued to deliver the best care to patients during the pandemic.

Christine VanZandbergen, VP of IS Applications, said, "COVID-19 has shown us that healthcare heroes come in all types of packages but share one critical quality: perseverance. Many thanks to all the IS 'nurses' who stand behind their front line colleagues during this pandemic. You are all our heroes!"

Deborah Welsh has spent her career at Penn Medicine giving back in any way possible. After working for 14 years as a nurse in Labor & Delivery at HUP, Deborah became a senior clinical analyst of PennChart Stork. When she switched roles, a colleague told her, “You put tools in the hands of the care givers; you ARE at the bedside." The words stuck with her. Deborah says, "This statement became the backdrop in my mind as I worked to learn, grow and integrate to a new team and a new function as a nurse. As a bedside nurse, the patient was always the focus. As a clinical analyst, the patient is still the focus. When I build, I build knowing that the end users, my former colleagues, need the best tools available to safely and efficiently care for patients. This is my motivation. This keeps me connected and satisfies my need to be at the bedside, now in spirit."
