The HVICU team at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC) wants to recognize their beloved colleague Cathy Hofmann, who has served in her role as a bedside nurse at PPMC for 42 years. 

"Cathy epitomizes the qualities of a nurse that cannot be taught in school and go beyond the textbook. Her true empathetic nature manifests itself in her care for her patients and their loved ones. Cathy provides not just the expertise in clinical care; she prides herself on providing the care that makes the patient feel “normal” again. The caring for the patient (shaving, washing hair, etc) that sometimes takes a low priority in an acute environment, Cathy always takes the time to do because she knows it matters greatly to the patients and their families."

"Her acts of kindness are countless. Cathy has taken it upon herself to drive home a family member who had arrived with her loved one in the ambulance and had no way home. Her laughter and tears reflect the compassion she brings to her overnight shifts. A wife, a mother of four, an animal lover—Cathy continuously finds a way to be a source of comfort and at times, discipline, for all who need it and regardless of the situation they are in."

"Lastly, although her years of experience may stereotypically suggest she would be resistant to change, she has impressively and openly embraced this frequently evolving environment of technology. She has not failed to impress her colleagues by perfecting the understanding of new equipment and an evolving documentation system. Cathy continues to be a mentor to her colleagues and an example for which we should all emulate our nursing professions after. In a place that can feel chaotic, Cathy remains our rock, and we are forever grateful for her."
