Canisius High School won two Canadian national championship gold medals while the Senior Eight took bronze at the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association regatta this weekend in St. Catharines, Ontario.
 
Overall, the program coached by Jacob Filby ’14 put 10 boats into the grand finals on Martindale Pond in the 77th annual running of the prestigious CSSRA.
 
The Junior Men’s Four, composed of Ethan Pirigyi ’26, Oliver Reynolds ’26, Brodie Vitko ’27, Owen Gray ’26 and Leo Mertz ’26 earned gold by defeating a fast-closing boat from E.L. Crossley (Ontario) by 0.3 seconds to claim the national title.
 
Liam Feeney and Isaiah Aljuwani dominated the Senior Pair race, winning by open water over the all-Canadian field.
 
The Senior Eight was a three-horse race, with Canisius, Brentwood College (British Columbia) and Vancouver College separating themselves from the start. In perfect, neutral conditions without wind or current, all three programs broke the 6-minute mark for the two-kilometer race. Canisius finished in 5:59.6, four seconds behind winner Vancouver and 1.8 behind Brentwood.
 
The lineup of Max Burget ’24, Peter Cross ’24, Liam Feeney ’25, Isaiah Aljuwani ’25, Ethan Pirigyi ’26, Alex Pusateri ’24, Thomas Skowron ’25, James Dodman ’24 and Teddy Hibbard ’24 matched the best finish for CHS in this event (2011, 2015).

The team will depart for Sarasota, Florida for the USRowing Youth National Championships on June 6-9. Canisius will compete for national titles in the Youth Four, two Youth Pairs and the Under-16 Quadruple Sculls.
