Yesterday, Mary Simpler, a cancer survivor and nurse in the Cardiovascular Recovery Unit at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital served as the honorary bat girl at the Orioles home game against the Red Sox. 

In 2013, Mary went through surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment for #BreastCancer. She was fortunate that she had an army of support during her battle with cancer. If not for the encouragement, love, and support, she doesn’t think she would have made it through. Now cancer-free, Mary has turned being a survivor into a true supporter for others battling breast cancer.

Her non-profit charity called Mary’s Army holds fundraisers and drives to provide support to breast cancer patients. Mary and her army visit our local hospitals and give flowers, balloons, and gift baskets to breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. The baskets typically include gift cards for essential needs like cleaning services, gas, dinners, beauty products, or anything else that can help make life easier for these breast cancer patients and their families. 

Mary and her army are just one more reason to #ThankAMedStarHealthNurse. Thank you, Mary, for your commitment to giving our patients the support they need during a stressful time in their lives.
