Torrey Pines // 2019

On my last trip to California- my family had a T6i with a basic kit lens still in the box, they asked me to show them what it could do.  Immediately self conscious about my lack of actual photography skills- I said I’d take it on a day-trip and see what I could remember. When I showed my family the results, my step-father said- Damn. I’ve been there so many times and I’ve never seen it like that.

I started with photography in 2002- but I was almost impressively bad with the numbers. F-stops, aperture, focal lengths, light meters- it all ripped my brain apart. I loved composition, documenting a moment that would never happen again, and a device that allowed me to show what the world looks like to me. Being a photo-journalist was the absolute dream- My teacher said I had the eye but not the math and the math was everything. I trashed my portfolio and declined a scholarship offer to SCAD.

When everything went digital and I was surrounded by photographers obsessed with unaffordable tech and advanced beyond anything I could wrap my head around I decided I was not- and never would be a “real photographer.” Once again- trashing my portfolio.

With my family excitedly crowded around what is now considered a simple, basic camera- I thought- Whatever happened to that part of my brain that loved doing what I could with the camera in my hands? And why exactly did I let other people’s cold ideas about math capability, expensive gear, and what “real photography” is ruin something I just quite simply loved to do?

Despite that I hardcore believe doing the best with what you have and making something out of nothing is what makes your work meaningful and real- I didn’t believe that about me. And not just with photography- all the way around.

So- I’m adding “stop letting other people ruin things that I love” to the 2020 list. Starting with not trashing these photos from when I took a t6i on a walk through Torrey Pines- followed by more walks with minimal cameras and not trashing those photos either.
