Celebrating our departing seniors, starting with Zach Mecca from Buffalo, NY.

“When you first meet Zachary “Mecca” Mecca, you are overwhelmed by his charm and taken aback by horrific music taste. Hailing from the greatest place in the world: Buffalo, Zach is proud of his Buffalonian heritage and will not hesitate to act as a live advertisement for the city while letting you know why “they’re not buffalo wings, they’re just wings”. Zach loves his alma mater Canisius High School, where he got down and dirty learning the fundamentals of rowing out of a shipping container. As one of my first friends on Harvard’s campus, I can say that Zach cares deeply about all of his friends and goes the extra mile to foster meaningful relationships with the people that he cares about. 

If I had to describe Mecca in one word it would be “grinder”. Mecca has done more OYO sessions in a year than most people do in four. I know that everyone on the team loves rowing for their own reasons, but Zach Mecca loves rowing because he loves doing the hard work that leads to the team’s success. As a 2x Head of the Charles champion, 2V National champion and a varsity letter winner in his first competitive season on the team, where Zach has gone success has followed. 

Preferring to hang out in bow of the 8+ where his voice can be most clearly heard, Zach’s vocal and inspiring legacy on this program will last longer than most. Without his constant encouragement for people to come put in the extra work and hit every workout like it’s their last, this team would not be where we are today. 

As Zach goes into his career next year working at [REDACTED] in NYC (ladies, he’s single), I am confident that his fierce work ethic and wholehearted commitment to whatever he does will propel him to continued success, and eventually back to Buffalo, New York.“
