Hey furiends, Tour Guide Sully here! Today I want to tell you a fun fact about the Olde Pink House Restaurant! As you can see behind me, the restaurant is quite pink. It's painted that color now, but the story of how it became pink is a little funny.

The building was built back in the late 1700s as a residence for James Habersham Jr., a founding father and important member of the early cotton trade. It was made of brick and built in the Georgian style. After Habersham's death, the building went though a number of changes, becoming a bank, attorney's office, and a tea room, amongst other things. At one point, it was owned by Jim Williams, of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil fame. Today, it remains one of Savannah's most popular restaurants.

I know you're thinking to yourself, well that's all well and good but how did the building end up PINK?!?

Well, it's really quite simple. As I mentioned before, the building was made of brick. This brick was then plastered over to give the mansion a nice white facade. Unfortunately, due to either bad bricks or a bad plaster job, the color of the bricks bled through the plaster, causing a pink hue. The owners would repaint the plaster white whenever they saw pink bleeding through, and time and time again, the pink would come right back. In the 1920's, the owner of the tea room embraced the color and ended up painting the entire mansion pink. How fun is that?
