Hi furiends, gather round! It's me, Tour Guide Sully! Welcome to the Colonial Park Cemetery! This is the oldest cemetery in Savannah at a cool 270 years old. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for ghosts and other mysterious happenings! 

As you may or may not know, Savannah is a city that is literally built upon its dead. In fact, it was once designated as America's Most Haunted City!

Like most older cities, it has had its share of scandals, disease, slavery, famine and fire. The city has burned twice, in 1796 and 1820. It was spared from being burned down during the Civil War when General Sherman decided to gift it to President Lincoln. People were hanged, shot in duels or fights or otherwise killed unmercifully. Sadly, that's just the way it was back in those days.

One thing visitors may not realize is that the squares and parks are often old burial grounds or hanging grounds. Wright Square, for instance, saw many a hanging considering it was next to the old jail. Forsyth Park was once a burial ground just steps away from the old Candler Hospital. Those beautiful monuments in the center of each square sometimes house a body underneath them. Creepy, but interesting, right?

Many places in Savannah have a ghost story of their own, and we highly recommend listening to a story or two. Mom says she is a little upset that we don't have a friendly ghost 👻 in our house! She says that they did have a ghost or two in the old house back in Maine though (before I was born!).

Oh and p.s. one last tidbit for you - the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (savhhiairport) is the only airport in the world that has graves in an active runway. Savannah: hauntingly scary from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.
