Bruce Arena was asked if he thinks the USMNT should always have an American coach 🇺🇸 

“They need a coach who can relate to them. He doesn’t have to be American but he should speak English,” Arena said to CBS Sports show KICKIN’ IT.

“We had a coach who didn’t speak English.”

“Look around the world, most of the leading countries have a coach from their country.”

Arena was also asked who he thinks are the best American coaches right now.

“In MLS, Jim Curtin (Philadelphia Union) does a very good job. Pat Noonan (FC Cincinnati) is an up and coming coach,” he said.

“Jesse Marsch? He’s a good coach. He’s had his ups and downs.”

“Gregg [Berhalter] continues to grow as a coach.”

Since Bora Milutinović left in 1995, the USMNT have only been appointing American coaches except Jurgen Kilsmann. 

But Klinsmann still had plenty of connections with the U.S. He has been living in California since he retired from playing, has an American wife, and is a naturalized American citizen.

Klinsmann was also no stranger to U.S. Soccer as he worked as a technical advisor for LA Galaxy and was a pundit for ESPN during the USMNT games before being given the USMNT head coach job.

It’s hard to see the USMNT appointing a foreign coach with no connection to U.S. Soccer in the future, even if they have a good CV.
