There are some Americans who wish they had gone to Europe when they had a chance. Bruce Arena is one of them.

“I had an offer to go to Denmark after the 2006 World Cup. I turned it down because I was too tired,” the 72-year-old told CBS Sports show KICKIN’ IT.

“I regret it. I may still do that now.”

“We had done the World Cup in July and they wanted me there next week. I didn’t want to do it.”

“I ended up going with [New York] Red Bulls, which was a mistake.”

“If I have a chance to coach in Europe now, I’d consider going. There might be a possibility.”

Arena started his coaching career all the way back in the 1970s. He hasn’t worked since last August and although he’s enjoying a relaxed life spending time with family, he’s eager to get back to work.

“I want to get back into coaching as soon as tomorrow. I coached 50 years straight, so I’ve enjoyed this break. It’s been fun,” Arena said.

“I was cleared in December [to coach in MLS again]. I’ve talked to a couple teams but there’s been a miscommunication [about my clearance].”

“If this is my ending, it’s a slap in the face. I have an interest in one more challenge.”

Arena has won 22 trophies as a coach in professional soccer.

However, his last job didn’t end well as he was placed on administrative leave by the New England Revolution.

He was alleged to have said “insensitive and inappropriate remarks” which led to the administrative leave and he resigned. This happened in August last year.

Now that he is cleared to work in MLS again, he wants one more challenge either in the U.S. or in Europe.

If Arena gets a job, he’d be one of the oldest soccer coaches in the world as he’s already 72.

To give you context, Sir Alex Ferguson retired from Manchester United at 71.

Arena also led the USMNT to quarterfinals in the 2002 World Cup but failed to qualify them for 2018.
