🎓 #ILLINOIS2019: Rachael Chew

Looking back on her four years on campus, Rachael Chew says she will miss everything about #ILLINOIS. “I will miss the people that I've met. I will miss the friends that I have made. I will miss walking or taking the bus to class. I will miss the convenience of meeting up with people on campus. I will miss the campus. I will miss everything. I am quite sentimental.” Since arriving on campus from Singapore in 2015 Rachael says she has done nothing but grow— joking that even the Freshman 15 is real and provides a little growth. “Ever since freshman year of college, I felt that I've been constantly growing and changing and thankfully it's for the better! One moment you would think that nothing would surprise you anymore and yet every semester I'm wrong. The experience itself has been life-changing and I couldn't have asked for more.” Since a young age, Rachael has always liked working with young children. With two working parents, she was often tasked with taking care of her younger siblings. She says that watching them grow has made her incredibly proud and may have had an influence in her choice to pursue Education. She hopes to watch her future students do the same. “I want to be able to teach and help as many students as I can. Seeing them grow and learn— that is what fuels my passion for teaching. The "aha!!" moment that the children get is a "WOOHOO" moment for me.” After graduation, Rachael plans to spend some time traveling around the U.S. before returning to Asia. As much as she has loved her time in America, she misses her home and her family; however, there is a chance she will be back to further her education in America.

When asked why she loves #ILLINOIS, Rachael simply said, “because it was my home.” 🧡
