🎓 #ILLINOIS2019: Chelsey Baker

Chelsey can describe her experience at #ILLINOIS and the College of Education in one word: unforgettable. ✨ “Every single professor, student, or faculty member I have met through the College of Education has had a lasting impact on me,” she said. “The College has been home the last four years. I’ve made incredible memories from studying abroad in France with other education majors, to late nights studying with cohort friends in the College basement.”

As a Special Education major, Chelsey said she pursued education because she is passionate about advocacy and working with students.

“As a teacher, I feel as though I am in a unique position to impact lives. I was motivated to enter this field by some of my own experiences growing up as a student, as well as my mother who served as a model disability advocate.”

Chelsey said her favorite person in the College is “hands down” Laurie Andrews. Laurie supported her through every step of the LBS1 program and helped her not only grow professionally, but also personally. Chelsey said Laurie spends so much of her time meeting with students and easing their worries so that they can be successful every day. .
Her future advice to students is to take advantage of as many opportunities as possible. Whether you want to study abroad or participate in research with faculty, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there!

After graduation, Chelsey plans to obtain a special education job in a high school or elementary school in a cross-categorical or co-teaching setting. 🧡
