What are the most telltale signs that summer is coming? Stifling heat, the smell of backyard BBQs, and inevitably, being kept awake at night due to the loud buzz of cicadas. We’re not being dramatic…their loudness has been factually placed between that of a hair dryer and a commercial jet engine. And, we regret to inform you that this year is going to be buggy (and noisy) by historic proportions. For the first time in 221 years (and the last time until 2245), two broods of cicadas will emerge from the ground at the same time, equaling trillions of cicadas simultaneously hatching, molting, and mating across the Southeast and Midwest.

Before you go invest in the best earplugs money can buy, give these insects a warm and extraordinary welcome at the Lincoln Memorial Gardens in Springfield, Illinois. To commemorate the historic event, Orkin (yes, the pest exterminator company) will host a symphony to coincide with what experts believe will be the peak area and time for this double brood emergence. Composer Bryan Rheude orchestrated the seven-act symphony, XIII x XIX: Cycle of the Cicadas, using recordings of the bug chorus, and dozens of classically trained musicians will play a never-before-heard symphony composed to incorporate the singing and rhythm of the screaming cicada. The good news is, you don’t have to live in Springfield to be enamored by this Saturday’s rare event. Tap the link in our bio for details on how you can stream the performance online. Will you be tuning in?
