Hoping to follow in his family’s footsteps of a policing role, he wasn’t going to let an injury setback ruin his opportunity to fulfil his dream. With a background in the hospitality industry, Rupinder remained inspired by his father’s role in the police overseas and his brother’s current role within Indian Border Security. After 15 years of living in Australia, he decided to submit his application for the PCO role at the end of 2022. Sustaining a knee injury requiring surgery early into the recruitment process, Rupinder was told it would take at least a year before he was able to undertake the fitness test. With his assessment date soon approaching, and not wanting to miss his opportunity, he decided to take time off from his full-time work to focus on his physical recovery. Passing the fitness test in September 2023, Rupinder began his training at the Police Academy in February this year. Following his graduation in April, he’s now stationed at Sunshine Police Station – although one thing from his time at the Academy that has stuck with him in his new role is “be positive, never give up and keep the 'can do' attitude”. PCOs are stationed across 22 locations in Victoria (including Sunshine!) and include metro and regional locations.
