Rest In Peace to George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others whose stories have gone untold. The UGA Student Government Association stands with the victims of police brutality and all those affected by the senseless murders of black people. Furthermore, we stand in solidarity with people who are speaking out and standing up for what is right throughout the country. ——————————————————————————
This type of injustice happens everywhere in the world, even on our own campus. Whether it be overt downtown bar discrimination or covert micro-aggressions in our classrooms, our silence enables racial injustice. If we fail to actively fight back against white supremacy, we are empowering the systems that lead to countless murders of innocent black people throughout our state and country. What happened in Minneapolis is a symptom of a disease that we all have a responsibility to combat. ——————————————————————————
To our black students: We hear you. We mourn with you. We will continue to do everything we can to support and uplift you. ——————————————————————————
To our non-black students: Silence is violence. If you are not fighting against racism, you are consciously upholding the very ideology that has led to the recent tragic deaths of innocent black people. We urge you to take a stand on the right side of history.
