After a man was shot and killed on Kansas City’s East Side this afternoon, 100 people have died in homicides in the city this year, according to data tracked by The Star.

There were 74 killings by this time last year, which ended as the second-deadliest year on record with 171 killings.

In 2020, 182 lives were lost, the most homicides ever recorded. By this time that year, the city had reported 97 homicides.

So far, Kansas City has solved or made arrests in just 32 of this year’s killings.
