In November 1980, when Patricia Jeschke, 31, did not show up for her secretary job at the St. Joseph Public Library, her mother crawled through her bedroom window and found a crime scene.

Jeschke’s nude body was found on the floor of her apartment along North Riverside Road in eastern St. Joseph.

A police officer, Michael Holman, who was found in possession of Jeschke’s credit card, was suspected in the killing. But he denied it, giving an alibi that was never proven.

Holman came up late in the police investigation, after 20-year-old Sandra Hemme, a patient at the St. Joseph State Hospital’s psychiatric ward, had already been charged.

Hemme, who gave many and conflicting statements about the crime, was eventually convicted and has now spent more than 42 years in prison.

Lawyers with the New York-based Innocence Project now are trying to free Hemme, arguing that newly discovered evidence proves she is innocent. Part of their case rests on “damning evidence” that implicated Holman and was withheld from the jury.
