Graduate Alice Scott has wanted to study journalism for years. From her middle school career in Kealing’s television news program to being awarded JEA’s National Journalist of the Year in her senior year of high school, journalism has held a special place in her heart.

This fall, Scott plans to attend the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill to major in Media and Journalism and minor in Spanish. She will also be a member of the Honors Carolina program and will be participating in a UNC Scholars program that awards her an academic scholarship.

One of the many reasons Scott chose UNC was for the quality of the journalism program, which passed her tests with flying colors during her in-person tour of the campus.

“When I was making my decision, a big part of it was looking at which school would give me the best education in journalism and would best prepare me to be a journalist,” Scott said. “When I toured UNC, I was really impressed and was excited to take advantage of the resources they have. I was able to talk to students and current professors who really showed me that they really care about the success of their students.”

When reflecting on the impact McCallum has made in Scott’s career, she felt that her time spent working in MacJournalism has paved her a path for success at UNC.

“I think MacJ helped me build up my portfolio and I’m sure that all of that work really helped me in my college application process,” Scott said. “I doubt I would be where I am now without being in MacJ and having been pushed to work at the highest level that I can.”

Scott was the only graduating newspaper senior to have served four years on the newspaper staff and have spent not one but two years as co-editor-in-chief. According to Scott, her time on staff has been rewarding for her to connect with her peers in school.

“MacJ was a great opportunity for me to be involved at McCallum,” Scott said. “I feel like I have gotten to talk to people I’ve never spoken to before, and I got to learn about things that go on at McCallum that I’m not involved with or don’t know much about.”
