This one is for the congregants!

After Christmas Eve, I've heard some church folks express their disappointment and surprise there's been no mention of what's happening specifically in Palestine at their church in sermons, prayers, Bible studies, or any other parts of worship, especially because they are pretty sure that their pastors are pro ceasefire.

As a pastor, here's some guidance that might nudge your pastoral leadership to be more bold and public about the displacement, violence, and war taking place in Palestine.

First, acknowledge the dual and triple relationships that your pastor is juggling. Not only are you a church member, but you may also be a friend, and in most communities, you are also their employer and boss. The possibility of losing employment and relationships is very real, and not all folks are in the place to risk it.

Secondly, directly encourage them to address what's happening in Palestine. Your pastor may need to hear from folks who are seeking and expecting spiritual leadership and guidance about Israel and Palestine.

And third, commit to sharing the heat. When and if the critique is cast their way, and it will be, be sure that you support them, and not just during side conversations in the parking lot, but where others can see and hear you strongly supporting this kind of pastoral leadership.

So there you go. To be clear, I am in no way justifying how long it is taking some pastoral leaders to speak out, but at the same time, I understand.

Now, these things may not work, the silence may continue, and you may need to seek a different place to grow in faith. But who knows? Maybe your compassion, your encouragement, and your support may be just the things needed to create change.
