Not sure about you, but I have never been a huge New Year Resolutions kind of person. That said, I very much understand how the turning of the calendar can be a seasonal marker and prompt to try something new. Some folks commit to a healthier way of living, tend to their spiritual disciples, or finally start that new hobby or activity.

Again, I think these are awesome if taken on in healthy ways, but I also think that it is just as awesome to get to this new year and give thanks that you made it through the one that just finished. In many ways, our productivity-obsessed society overly values deliverables, and it condemns any failure to live up to the self-imposed goals that New Year Resolutions place upon our already overly-taxed souls. Seriously people, haven't we taken on enough over the past three years?

Yes, New Year Resolutions can be imaginative and playful ways to explore the world, expand experiences, and recommit to important things. But if and as we make them, let's keep them generative and meaningful and resist the social urge to create burdensome expectations for others or to weaponize them against ourselves. We are not the sum of our accomplishments, and we are loved regardless of how we make, maintain, or accomplish any New Year Resolutions.

As for me, I will simply give thanks that you and I are here and loved: today, tomorrow, and throughout the year.

resolutions

a year past
a calendar completed
365 days in the rearview mirror
you do you

a new year
rhythms and seasons turning again
disciplines reimagined and reengaged
you do you

a time for new beginnings
in body, in mind, in spirit, in soul
in practices, in priorities, in personhood
you do you

a time to change nothing
a time to revel in what is
a time to rejoice in what is now
a time to simply breathe
today, tomorrow, all year
you do you
