If there is any time in the year that reminds us that we do not live in a binary world, it is the holiday season. If you are like me, this season simultaneously provides experiences of unexpected joy that are often tempered by reminders of loss and trauma.

Like most days, our spirits, bodies, and minds ebb and flow and experience the highs and lows of life and living. Each day I attempt to give myself permission to feel what I am feeling. Sometimes I need to act upon whatever I am feeling, and at other times, I simply need to let the waves flow over, through, or under me — and move on.

However this season impacts you and however you may handle whatever is before you, I hope that you are able to remember that you are not alone.
 
The Season

The world is abuzz with holiday spirit.
There is joy in the air.
Music rings out all around us.
Rooftops are strung with lights.
Festivities are busting forth from a season of lull.

And yet, and yet, dear world, for some
this season is a reminder of estrangement and isolation
the pressures of life make breathing strenuous and strained
the only sounds heard are wails and groans of despair
the search for shelter of body and spirit is a daily unknown
and there is no respite from pain, grief, loss, and sorrow.

Whether you are some or all of these things
know that you are seen
believe that you are loved.
