#25WordAdventPrayers

“What should we do then?” the crowd asked. John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.” Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?” “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them. Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?” He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely—be content with your pay.” — Luke 3:10-14 

Sharing our stuff is hard. Always has been, and always will be, but to share that which we need to sustain our own comfort and security is a loving and revolutionary act of faith.

One difficult aspect of sharing is that we trick ourselves into believing that we do not have enough to share. Scarcity thinking is insidious and causes us to accumulate and hoard because we believe that we will never really have enough.

Thing is, that for many of us, not only do we have enough, we have an abundance. And it is precisely in response to that abundance, that we should share freely.

God with us –
When we grasp so tightly
to wealth born of the world
remind us of your abundant acts
and ­give us the courage to do likewise.
