Class of 2024 graduate Lainil Ortiz will attend ACC this fall and major in basic health sciences. She plans to get her prereqs, then apply to ACC’s dental hygiene program and then to the program at A&M.

“ACC has a really good dental hygiene program,” Ortiz said, “which is what I want to get into, and it’s not very expensive.”

Ortiz has been interested in dentistry for a long time, ever since her mother took her with her when she was working in dentistry. ACC’s program stuck out to her for a few reasons.

“It’s just really good.” Ortiz said. “[ACC has] really good equipment; the hands-on programs within the program that they do is insane, especially for how much it costs. I think it’s just a really good opportunity.”

While she’s sad to be leaving McCallum and her friends, she’s ready to start a new chapter of her life. The thing she’s looking forward to the most is the relative autonomy she will enjoy once she goes to college.

“It’s a certain degree of freedom you get once you graduate, like starting to find out who you are as a person,” Ortiz said. “[It’s] a little scary but exciting.”
