SETTING OFF TO SOUTHWESTERN: Isa Aleman-Ward is going to Southwestern University this fall to double major in biology and either music composition or music theory. Aleman-Ward was drawn to Southwestern in part for its size and community.

“I like that it’s a smaller college,” Aleman-Ward said. “I feel like it’ll be harder to get lost in the crowd. I already know people who go there, so it’ll be fun to meet with people around the community and also get to know people who are already there. I also like their education system.”

Aleman-Ward enjoyed the campus during her visits to the university.

“I visited a few times,” she said. “It’s a really pretty campus; it’s very outdoorsy and green, and it looks like an older style.”

Aleman-Ward is excited to continue her interests in college, from music to athletics.

“I am interested in the piano accompaniment and the tennis team,” she said. “They are a D3 school, so hopefully it’ll be a little easier but I am excited about it.”

With Ms. Nix’s help, the college process went smoothly for Aleman-Ward.

“It was actually not too difficult,” she said. “Ms. Nix is amazing, and she helped me through all of it, so it was easy to navigate through that with her help. And senior year was definitely less stressful once the college stuff was over: I can really just not have to worry as much.”

Aleman-Ward had all of her closest friends around her when she opened her acceptance letter.

“I had just had a Christmas party, so all my friends were there, and I was like ‘Oh my God, I just got an email from Southwestern University,’ so I opened it and had all of my closest friends there,” she said. “It was awesome.”.

Aleman-Ward is going to miss her friends but plans to stay connected to them while making new ones at college.

“Meeting new people has been my favorite part of senior year,” Aleman-Ward said. “I know it’s the end of my senior year, but meeting new people has felt really nice. I’m going to miss a lot of my friends; it’s going to be different not seeing my friends every day, but I’ll make new friends and keep in contact.”
