A sloppy arena brought clarity for Tanner Green.

The tie-down roper held mild expectations as he traveled to the Woodward (Okla.) Elks Rodeo, his outlook clouded by the weather as he competed in the slack.

"I went Wednesday morning, and it was muddy and pretty wet, and it wasn't like my intentions were to not win, but I didn't think I would do too good," Green said. "But I drew a really great calf. She ran a great pattern, stayed out of the mud, and it worked out."

Green posted a time of 8.3 seconds, a number that held firm for the title, edging Ryan Jarrett (8.9) and Haven Meged (9.4). It is impossible to overstate what the performance means to Green as he aims to reach his first National Finals Rodeo this season.

He has flirted around the top 40 throughout his career but has never been in this position with the big money waiting over the next several weeks.

"Oh man, it's just a big confidence booster. It gets the summer rolling. And it gets you where you want to be at this time of year," said Green, who hails from Cotulla, Texas, and has been on the circuit since 2017. "I have been close before. To be in this spot, it's a really good feeling."

A win matters. It always does. But the real momentum powering Green comes from his horses. The 25-year-old rode Voodoo to victory in Woodward but has experienced success on six-year-old Bird, leaving him with a plan moving forward.

"Voodoo was good for Oklahoma with the experience, and (the conditions). Bird, he's a young horse. I rode him for a friend last year. He didn't want him and sold him to me. I have been riding him quite a bit," Green said. "We get along really well. We just clicked. I am going to be riding him mainly now."

The grandson of legendary cowboy Phil Lyne, Green grew up in rodeo and he continues to carve his own path. Even if it means navigating some mud.

"I just love the sport," Green said. "I love to compete. It's part of my life and what I know."

Other winners at the $172,392 rodeo were all-around cowboy Jake Clay ($3,655, team roping and steer roping); bareback rider Rocker Steiner (89 points on Beutler & Son Rodeo's Unleashed); steer wrestler Jarek VanPetten (3.6 seconds); team ropers Jake Clay/Trey Yates (4.6 seconds); saddle bronc rider Keene Justesen (86 points on Beutler & Son Rodeo's Mega Millions); barrel racer Stevi Hillman (17.08 seconds); steer roper Tony Reina (34.4 seconds on three head); and bull rider Creek Young (87 points on Beutler & Son Rodeo's Aces High).
