As college drop off weekend approached and the tears started to announce their arrival, @robin_pugh and I have put on repeat, "Maybe if we don't talk about it, it won't happen."

Well, apparently our powers of avoidance are not all that effective — this weekend we dropped Youngest off at @PitzerCollege and her adventure has begun.

Our hearts are bursting with pride and love for the person she has become. Our souls are filled with excitement and anticipation for the possibilities that will unfold before her. And  the tears are flowing on behalf of generations past and her community today as this bittersweet transition and transformation is made real.

And to our dear A.

If you're reading this on the DL, know that we could not be prouder of you. We hope that you will continue to be fiercely independent of Spirit and that your heart, mind, and voice will be stretched in profound ways. We hope that your humanity will be impacted in a ways that will affirm your empathetic soul and deepen your commitment to the common good. And we hope that, in times of struggle, you will remember that you are not alone and that the spirit of your ancestors AND your extravagant, extra, and extended family of today hold you tenderly through it all. 

We know that the extra clinginess of the past few weeks have been annoying, but know that every extra question about your day, offer to shop, and weepy look were all borne from a well of joyful hope that cannot be fully put into words. 

While your family and community can be A LOT: a lot of SASS, a lot of LAUGHTER, and a lot of FOOD, on this occasion all we offer is a lot of LOVE. Now go — go be a college student: experiment, learn, risk, challenge, stretch, wander, play, sleep, and love.

We are grateful for those who have helped to raise our family over the years. From classrooms, fields, stages, protests and sanctuaries you have helped to expand our worldview and shape humanity. Yes, our journey is ongoing, but this marks yet another moment when we can collectively bask in a job well done.
